It Takes Tooth

This game is based on the real history of the Shanghai Bund. By creating chapters that depict the Bund from different ages, it invites players to engage in and interact with the process of how time has changed the city's function, building fabrics, and even people's life. By opening an interactive book of history in front of the players, the game salutes history and encourages players to feel and to think.

Shanghai The Bund History Line

The history line and researches of backgrounds have great importance for both understanding the 'Tooth-fitting' Project and the design of this game. By gathering various elements and information from different eras, the game serves its purpose as an interactive history book.

The Bund started its transformation As an economic center in the early 1900. Banking institutions such as HCBC, Yangtze Insurance, trading companies such as G. Northern Tel, Jardine Matheson, and Russell first took the bund. Some municipal offices and the British Consulate were also here.

As more of the previous buildings were demolished or  renovated,  a large number of new 'teeth' were inserted, mostly were for banks and trade offices, including the famous Chartered Bank. The well-known Peace Hotel was also built during this period.

The 'teeth' become closer together. During World War II, most of the changes involved renovation and ownership. Japan led this phase of change. The Shanghai Club became the Japanese naval headquarters after the war, and Japanese trading companies and banks also settled in the Bund at this time.

With the end of World War II, China regained control of the Bund. The architectural changes in this stage were mainly post-war restoration and functional changes. Customs, state-owned enterprises, and government agencies are concentrated on the Bund. Local Chinese banks also have risen to occupy the bund.

The development of the Pudong Area across the river has eliminated the need to concentrate all economic and trade activities on the Bund. New buildings are mainly restaurants, shopping places, and hotels.Today the Bund has become an open-air museum and the symbol of Shanghai.
